The truth about the Nickel-Cadmium batteries

Pilots, by virtue of their activities, are called to use regular instruments with rechargeable batteries. These include portables VHF-AM (aviation band), hand tools such drills, screwdrivers and wireless phones, flashlights, rechargeable shavers, not to mention children's toys ...

These devices, require a lot of energy, are equipped with rechargeable batteries to achieve savings in the longer term. A few precautions will result in a long life of these batteries. The first is to remember that these batteries often like to work. After a long period of inactivity they gradually lose their ability (expressed in ampere-hour). It is important not to completely unload the batteries before recharging. It is very harmful to submit them at high temperatures when they are discharged. It is preferable to recharge as soon as they show a sign of weakness or that the low battery indicator lights up if the aircraft is so equipped.

The devices consuming only little energy or may remain several months without use would not be well served by nickel-cadmium batteries because of their high rate of self.

Shippers for these batteries are like "constant current" as opposed to chargers for acid batteries that are "voltage or constant voltage."
